Travelling safely as a blind or partially sighted person is not about proving that no assistance is needed. Independence means retaining control over the journey including the right to select appropriate transportation, use accessible technology and involve trusted people when additional support is useful. Blind travel safety also involves more than avoiding traffic or carrying a charged phone. Many of the most difficult situations occur in the gaps between services such as: the distance between a taxi and the correct entrance, the point at which one airport employee hands responsibility to another or the moment when a GPS application announces that the destination has been reached without identifying where the door is. A practical safety plan must account for these less obvious gaps instead of assuming that reaching the correct address is the same as arriving safely.
Choosing Appropriate Transportation
Specialised disability buses, paratransit services and accessible taxis are often more manageable than regular public buses, particularly when a route is unfamiliar or requires several transfers. A public bus may still be appropriate for a familiar journey although the traveller must reach the correct stop, identify the vehicle, confirm the route and know when to leave. Inconsistent stop announcements, relocated stops and complicated transfer points can make an otherwise simple journey unnecessarily difficult. Disability transportation may provide door-to-door or kerb-to-kerb service, reducing the need to navigate between several vehicles or locate a stop that is poorly marked. Eligibility rules and booking procedures vary by community so registration should be completed before the service is urgently required.
In addition, taxis and rideshares present a different safety concern because a blind traveller may be unable to verify the vehicle visually. Instead of asking, “Are you my driver?”, the traveller can ask the driver to state the passenger’s name and then confirm the driver’s name and intended destination. Before leaving the vehicle, the traveller should establish their orientation. A driver saying, “The entrance is over there,” provides no usable information. The traveller can ask whether the entrance will be directly ahead, to the left or to the right after exiting, how far away it is and whether there are kerbs, steps, driveways or moving vehicles between the drop-off point and the door. This addresses the “last twenty metres” problem: a journey may end at the correct address while leaving the blind traveller beside a car park, loading entrance or unfamiliar side of the building.
Booking Assistance for Trains & Planes
Train and air journeys contain several transitions including check-in, security screening, finding the correct platform or gate, boarding, completing connections and collecting luggage. Passenger assistance should be requested when booking the ticket and confirmed before departure. The request should describe what is actually needed, such as: guidance from the terminal’s designated meeting point, support through security, assistance during transfers and guidance to baggage collection or ground transportation. The Canadian Transportation Agency recommends giving transportation providers at least 48 hours’ notice for most disability-related services although some requests involving additional information or documentation may require up to 96 hours (Canadian Transportation Agency, 2020). Travellers should keep a record of the request because assistance written into a reservation is easier to confirm than an informal request made after arrival.
The most common weakness in passenger assistance is the hand-off between employees. One person may guide the traveller through security and leave without explaining who will return, when boarding begins or where assistance can be requested again. A blind traveller should confirm each hand-off directly: who is responsible for the next stage, where the traveller should wait and approximately when someone will return. During a connection, staff should be told that assistance is required throughout the transfer, not merely as far as the next terminal or platform. If the traveller is left alone, they should know the nearest staffed service point and have the transportation provider’s telephone number available. Essential medication, identification, charging equipment and travel documents should remain in carry-on luggage, while checked bags can be marked with a distinctive tactile strap or tag.
Learning Routes & Recognising Changes
Before travelling independently, a new route can be practised with an orientation and mobility specialist or a trusted person. The route should be learnt through dependable sensory information including pavement textures, slopes, fences, traffic patterns, building entrances and changes in surrounding sound. Orientation and mobility instruction may cover white-cane use, street crossings, public transportation and the interpretation of environmental information through the traveller’s remaining senses (CNIB, n.d.). Regardless, familiarity does not guarantee that the route will remain unchanged. For example, roadworks, snowbanks, fallen branches, parked vehicles and temporary signs may appear without warning. The white cane or guide dog remains essential on a familiar route because its purpose includes detecting what was not present during the previous journey.
Separating Navigation From Location Sharing
Different applications perform different safety functions. For example, Google Maps can establish a walking or public-transit route, estimate travel time and identify nearby businesses while Lazarillo is designed for blind and partially sighted users and can announce the current street, approaching intersections, nearby places and other points of interest through spoken information (Lazarillo LLC, n.d.). Using both can provide better useful information, that is, Google Maps may supply the general route, while Lazarillo provides continuing information about the surrounding environment. However, neither application can confirm that a crossing is currently safe or guarantee that the announced destination is the correct public entrance. GPS accuracy can also decline near large buildings, car parks and closely positioned streets so environmental information and mobility skills must take priority when the application’s instructions do not match the traveller’s surroundings.
Audio navigation should support awareness instead of covering the sounds needed for safe movement. Noise-cancelling headphones and earbuds in both ears can interfere with the ability to hear traffic flow, approaching bicycles, other pedestrians and changes in the surrounding environment. A small clip-on speaker can be a practical alternative because it keeps both ears open while allowing navigation instructions or a telephone conversation to remain audible. The speaker can be attached to clothing or a bag strap and kept at the lowest effective volume so private information is not announced unnecessarily. An open-ear headset or a single earbud may also work for some travellers although the chosen method should never make it difficult to hear the environment. Navigation instructions are helpful, but they should not become louder than the journey itself.
Creating a Location-Sharing Protocol
Life360 and similar applications allow selected family members, partners or friends to follow a traveller’s location. Life360 permits members of a private Circle to share their positions and use notifications connected to saved places (Life360, n.d.). This can provide useful support during walks, taxi journeys and long-distance travel although the application becomes more effective when everyone agrees on what the information means. The traveller and trusted contacts should establish a missed-arrival protocol, such as calling after a short delay, contacting the transportation provider if the person cannot be reached and requesting emergency assistance only when there is evidence of immediate danger. Without an agreed procedure, contacts may react too quickly to an ordinary delay or wait too long when help is genuinely needed. Location sharing should also remain consensual and limited to people the traveller trusts; safety does not require permanent surveillance.
Carrying a Reachable Personal Alarm
A personal safety alarm provides another layer of protection by creating a loud sound that may attract attention, discourage threatening behaviour or help nearby people locate someone who requires assistance. Its usefulness depends heavily on where it is carried. An alarm buried inside a handbag cannot be reached quickly, so it should be clipped to a coat, belt, cane pouch or exterior section of a bag. The traveller should practise locating, activating and silencing it by touch in a controlled environment. A regular personal alarm does not automatically contact emergency services or transmit a location unless the specific device includes those functions. Therefore, it should be used alongside a phone, location-sharing application and trusted contact instead of being treated as a complete emergency system.
Requesting Help Without Losing Autonomy
Asking for assistance is part of safe travel although the request should be specific. A traveller may ask someone to identify a bus, locate an entrance, read a platform number or guide them around an obstruction. Whenever possible, help should be requested from an identifiable employee, transit operator, security officer or person working at a service counter. If physical guidance is required, the blind traveller can explain their preferred guiding technique and take the guide’s arm. Nobody should pull the traveller by the wrist, push them from behind or take control of the white cane without consent. The cane is part of the traveller’s mobility system, not an inconvenient object for another person to move. Furthermore, requesting directions does not require disclosing where the traveller lives, whether they are alone or how long they will be away. Money, identification, luggage and mobile devices should remain under the traveller’s control.
Responding to Disorientation
Becoming temporarily disoriented does not mean that the traveller has failed. However, continuing to walk without reliable information can increase the distance from the intended route so the safer response is to stop, move away from traffic or platform edges and identify the last confirmed landmark. The traveller can compare Google Maps with Lazarillo, telephone a trusted contact, request assistance from identifiable staff or enter a staffed public place. Every journey should also have a point at which the original plan is abandoned. If orientation cannot be restored, the phone battery becomes too low, the weather deteriorates or the area feels unsafe, arranging disability transportation or a taxi is a responsible decision.
In conclusion, blind travel safety is created through several connected layers such as: appropriate transportation, booked assistance, mobility skills, accessible navigation, location sharing, a reachable personal alarm and a clear backup plan. Independence is not measured by how little support a blind person uses, however, it is demonstrated through their ability to choose that support, establish boundaries and retain authority over what happens next.
